Care homes and healthcare facilities

Kostertuin Zakelijk designs, builds and maintains outdoor spaces for nursing homes, residential care centres and other healthcare facilities, with a focus on safety, accessibility and calm for residents.

A good outdoor space adds to the wellbeing of residents, the job satisfaction of staff and the impression on visitors. Working at a care location calls for extra care: working quietly, familiar faces, safe walking routes and flexibility around the daily care routine.

What you need from a grounds partner

  • Paths and terraces must stay level, slip-resistant and accessible for wheelchairs and walkers
  • Work must not disturb residents’ rest and daily rhythm
  • One fixed point of contact and predictable annual costs
  • An outdoor space that invites people to go outside

Sensory and therapy gardens

Design and construction of a safe sensory garden, for example for residents living with dementia: clear looping paths, recognisable planting, scent, colour and seating in sun and shade. We leave out toxic and thorny plants.

Scheduled grounds maintenance

A maintenance contract with a fixed frequency and a regular team who know the site and its house rules. Work is planned around the daily routine of the location.

Accessible paving

Relaying sunken paths and building step-free, slip-resistant walking routes and terraces — important for reducing the risk of falls.

Permeable paving

Partly greening paved gardens and paths or making them permeable: cooler in summer and fewer puddles on walking routes.

From our work

  • Courtyard of a residential complex
  • Planting care at a residential building
  • Mowing lawns along tall hedges

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with a regular team at care locations?

Yes. We aim for a fixed team per location, so residents and staff see familiar faces and our gardeners know the house rules and points of attention.

Can work be scheduled outside busy times?

Yes. We plan in consultation with the location, for example outside mealtimes, rest periods or visiting hours.

Can you design a sensory garden for people living with dementia?

Yes. We design clear, safe gardens with looping paths, landmarks and non-toxic planting, in consultation with care staff and, if desired, the client council.
