When is the best time to build a garden?
Paving, decking and fences can be installed all year round, except in frost. Planting is best done in spring or autumn (roughly March–May and September–November), so plants root well. For a spring build, ideally book in winter.
Autumn: the underrated peak season
In autumn the soil is still warm and moist: ideal for trees, hedges and perennials. Winter is also quieter, so your garden is ready by spring.
Spring: popular, so plan early
Everyone wants to enjoy their garden in May. If you have the design made in January or February, you are at the front of the queue.
Summer and winter: what works?
In summer we can easily lay paving, build a deck or put up a canopy; new planting does need extra water then. In winter the work continues as long as it does not freeze: groundwork, fences and timber structures go well, and the plants go in during spring.
How to plan it smartly
Start with a design and a quote, so the schedule is fixed before the busy season begins. Combine work where possible: groundwork and paving first, planting later in the right planting season. That way you do not have to wait and every plant gets the best start.
