Tree felling permit in Haarlem: when do you need one?
In Haarlem you often need an environmental permit (felling permit) to cut down a tree above a certain trunk size, even in a private back garden. The exact rules are in the municipality of Haarlem’s tree bylaw; always check before felling.
How to check
Measure the trunk circumference at about 1.30 metres high and look up the current rules on the municipality of Haarlem’s website or the Omgevingsloket. Not sure? We are happy to take a look with you.
Pruning instead of felling
Felling is often unnecessary. Thinning or lifting the crown lets light back into the garden while keeping the shade, privacy and character of the tree. Pruning does not require a permit.
Mind the nesting season
Even with a permit you must take nesting birds into account (roughly March to July). Disturbing nests is prohibited by law.
